This guide will show you how to enable or disable the Auto Screen Rotation feature on your iPhone or iPad.
iOS has a feature that allows the device to automatically rotate the screen based on how the device is held. If the device is held in landscape orientation, then the landscape orientation is automatically set on the device.
If the user holds the device in portrait orientation, the screen automatically switches to portrait orientation.
You can easily enable or disable Auto Screen Rotation by following a few simple steps.
- Swipe down from the top right corner of the screen to access Control Center.
- Tap on the icon with a padlock on it. When the button turns white and the padlock turns red, this means the auto rotation lock is enabled.
On devices running iOS 18 or later, the Auto Screen Rotation button also says Orientation Unlocked when the orientation lock is disabled. It says Orientation Locked when the Screen Rotation is enabled.
While this is a useful feature, it can also be annoying. For example, you may not want your iPhone’s orientation to change to landscape mode when you are lying sideways on the bed and want to use the device in portrait orientation.
It is a good thing that Apple lets you turn it off when you don’t need to use it.
