Starting iOS 17 Apple is introducing a brand new way to mute and unmute calls when you are talking through your AirPods.

The feature is available on all recent AirPods models, making it easier for users to conveniently mute or unmute themselves without even touching their iPhone.

How it works

It is very easy to take advantage of the new mute and unmute feature in iOS 17 or later.

You can mute or unmute yourself from AirPods in the following way: While you are on call all you have to do is press the stem of your AirPods in order to mute yourself. You can also quickly unmute yourself by pressing the stem one more time. The area you are supposed to press is marked with green circles in the image above.

On AirPods Max, which does not have an AirPods Pro-like stem, users can press on the Digital Crown button, which will mute and unmute the call while a call is active.

The new mute and unmute feature of iOS 17 is available on various different AirPods models. This includes the original AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro second generation, AirPods 3rd generation, and AirPods Max.

This easy way of muting and unmuting yourself works on all sorts of calls including regular phone calls, FaceTime audio calls, FaceTime video calls, WhatsApp calls, and basically any call app that uses iOS’s default calling interface.

Unable to mute and unmute calls with AirPods?

If you are not able to mute or unmute your calls with AirPods, then it might be because your iPhone is not updated to iOS 17 and your AirPods firmware is not updated to the latest version. You can fix this by installing iOS 17 on your device.

After you have installed iOS 17 on your iPhone, your AirPods firmware will also get updated automatically.

So this is how you can quickly mute and unmute yourself with AirPods when you are on a phone call.
