A new retro PC emulator called UTM SE has just launched on the App Store. This is the first-ever emulator on the App Store that makes it possible for iPhone and iPad users to emulate old versions of macOS, Windows, Linux, and others on their devices.
What makes this particular emulator’s launch exciting is that now users will be able to run retro operating systems like Windows XP, Mac OS 9.2.1, FreeDOS, and others on their iPhones and iPads and take advantage of their iOS device’s processing power in a new way.
In addition to running retro operating systems, UTM SE also lets users play old PC games on their iOS devices.
The QEMU-based emulator is capable of emulating x86, PPC, and RISC-V architectures. Users can run pre-built machines from the app or configure new machines from scratch.
You can download the UTM SE emulator from the App Store, where it is available as a free download. It is available for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro.
UTM SE’s launch on the App Store has been a bumpy one. Apple had previously rejected UTM SE from the App Store back in June 2024 stating that it only allows game emulators for iOS in the store. However, the company had a change of heart and allowed this PC emulator in the App Store, which is great news for fans of PC emulation on iOS.
Previously Apple has allowed multiple gaming emulators including a PlayStation Emulator for iPhone and iPad, a PSP emulator, and several Nintendo and classic game emulators for iOS.
