In this guide, you will learn how you can enable or disable the microphone on iPhone 17 or iPhone 17 Pro.
Whether you want to prevent apps from listening to you or completely block mic access, iOS makes it super easy for you to disable the microphone.
In this tutorial, we have also shown you how you can disable Siri completely and monitor microphone use on your device.
Disable Microphone Access for Specific Apps
- Launch Settings and go to ‘Privacy & Security’.
- Here, tap on the Microphone option.
- Here you will find a list of apps that have requested microphone access.
- Turn on the toggle for apps you wish to grant microphone access to.
- Turn off the toggle to restrict an app’s access to the microphone.
After you have disabled microphone access, that app will no longer be able to use your iPhone’s mic to record audio or make calls.
You can also turn off microphone access for an app from its settings.
For this, go to Settings -> Apps -> App name -> turn off the toggle for Microphone.
Turn off the microphone for Siri
If you wish to stop Siri from using your iPhone’s microphone and listening to your conversations, then you can turn off the microphone for Siri by following these steps.
- Open Settings and tap on Apple Intelligence & Siri option.
- Tap on Talk to Siri.
- Here select the ‘Off’ option. This will disable the Hey Siri feature on your device.
- You can also disable the Press Side Button for Siri toggle to stop Siri activation from the side button.
Monitor microphone activity
While there isn’t a master switch to turn off the microphone on iPhone, you can monitor the microphone usage from the Control Center and the device’s status bar.
iPhone displays an orange dot in the status bar indicating when the microphone is in use. iOS also displays an orange bar on the Control Center screen that, when tapped, shows the name of the app and opens the app currently using the microphone.
There you have it, this is how you can enable or disable microphone access for apps on iPhone, turn off Hey Siri, and monitor microphone usage from Control Center.
