How to Use Picture-in-Picture Mode on iPad

Picture in picture mode on iPad

In this tutorial, you will learn how to enable and start using the Picture-in-Picture mode for video on your iPhone. This feature allows you to watch videos and make video calls in a floating, resizable window while you do other things on your iPad.

A Picture-in-Picture or PiP window can be resized, moved around, and minimized to a side when you want to use an app, check email, or browse the web while watching videos and make FaceTime calls.

Use Picture-in-Picture mode on iPad

First of all, make sure Picture-in-Picture mode is enabled on your iPad. Here’s how you can do it.

  1. Unlock your iPad and open Settings.
  2. From the side pane, tap on Multitasking and Gestures.
  3. Turn on the toggle for ‘Start PiP Automatically’.

Now that PiP mode is activated, you can start using it. Open any app that supports Picture-in-Picture mode, such as Safari, FaceTime, Apple TV, YouTube (with Premium subscription), and put the video in full-screen mode.

After putting the video in full-screen, exit the app. The video should continue to play in a floating Picture-in-Picture window that you can interact with.

  • Pinch in or Pinch out on the PiP window to increase or decrease its size.
  • Drag it around the screen to place it wherever you like.
  • Swipe it to the side to temporarily hide or minimize it while still listening to its audio.

You can go back to the full-screen mode by tapping on the full-screen icon on the PiP window.

That’s it, this is how you can enable and use Picture-in-Picture mode on your iPad.
