Some hard drives require an adapter to connect to the iPad. Here you will learn all about it, so without any further ado, let’s get right into it.

Connect External Hard Drive or SSD to iPad

You will be connecting your external drive to the iPad through its charging port. First, check what type of port your iPad has.

  • USB-C iPads: iPad Pro (3rd gen. or later), iPad Air (4th gen. or later), iPad mini 6 or later, and iPad 10th generation or later.
  • Lightning iPads: All other models have Lightning ports.

If you have a Lightning port or if your external hard drive comes with a USB-A connector, then you will need one of the following adapters.

Connect the drive to iPad

  1. Take the USB-C or Lightning connector of the hard drive or the adapter and plug it directly into your iPad’s charging port.
  2. If you are using an adapter, then plug it into your hard drive’s connection port.
  3. Launch the Files app and go to the Browse section.
  4. Under Locations, tap on your drive’s name.
  5. You should see the contents of the hard drive in the right column. This includes its folders, photos, videos, documents, and more. You can tap on any item to preview it.
  6. Drag and drop the files or long-press on them to copy and paste them to your iPad’s storage. Go ‘On My iPad’ section and paste the files there.
  7. After you are done using the hard drive, simply unplug it from your iPad.

That’s it, this is how you can connect an external hard drive or SSD drive to your iPad and access its contents through the Files app.
