When you add a family or friend as your account recovery contact they are able to help you regain access to your Apple ID in case you forget its password or it gets locked for some reason. They can do so by generating a six-digit recovery code from their iPhone, iPad or Mac and share it with you.

While assigned Account Recovery Contacts can generate codes to help you recover your account you can rest assured as they cannot access your account or its data.

How To Assign Someone as your Account Recovery Contact

You can follow the instructions below to assign a friend or family member as your Apple ID’s Account Recovery Contact.

Step 1. On your iPhone or iPad open Settings and tap on your name from the top.

Step 2. Tap on Password & Recovery option. From the next page tap on Account Recovery.

Step 3. Now tap on ‘Add Recovery Contact‘ and choose the contact that you want to add as your recovery contact.

How To Generate Code To Help A Friend Recover Apple ID

After assigning an Account Recovery contact to your Apple account, you can ask them to generate a recovery code for your device. Your family or friend can follow these steps to generate a Recovery Code and help you in recovering your Apple ID.

Step 1. Ask your family or friend to go to Settings -> Tap on their name -> Password & Security.

Step 2. From there tap on Account Recovery option.

Step 3. Under Account Recovery For heading tap on your name.

Step 4. From the next screen ask them to tap on ‘Get Recovery Code‘ option and tell you the code that appears on their device’s screen.

How To Remove Yourself As Recovery Contact

In case you want to remove yourself as the Account Recovery Contact, then you can follow the steps below.

Step 1. Open Settings and tap on your name from the top.

Step 2. On the net screen tap on Password & Security -> Account Recovery.

Step 3. Tap on the person’s name you want to remove yourself as Recovery Contact.

Step 4. Lastly tap on the ‘Remove Contact‘ button.

The person you just removed will get a notification alert letting them know that you have removed yourself as their Recovery Contact.
