Before You Sell iPhone

Every year or so, we sell our iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to buy a new one. If you are selling your current iPhone or giving it away then there are a few certain steps that you should follow to make the transition as hassle-free as possible.

In this step by step guide we have shared some important things that you should do before you sell iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

In section two of this selling guide you can also find useful steps that you can perform if you have already sold your iPhone or iPad and no longer have it in possession to make these changes.

This is an up to date guide and applies to all iOS 11 powered devices. Follow these steps before you sell iPhone or iPad.

Things To Do Before You Sell iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

1. Back up your device using iTunes or iCloud (or back up to PC with iPhone to PC transfer software. If you have purchased a new iPhone, you can directly sync data on old iPhone to new iPhone via iPhone manager free). This will protect your data from getting deleted.

2. If you own an Apple Watch unpair it.

3. Sign out of your iCloud account by going to Settings > Your Name > Sign Out. Enter you password and tap on ‘Turn Off’.

4. Now delete all content and settings by going to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. If asked, enter your Apple ID details. Finally hit the ‘Erase’ button. You might also be asked device’s passcode or Restrictions passcode.

When you erase your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch the Activation Lock and Find My iPhone are automatically disabled.

5. You should also deregister iMessage in case you are switching from iPhone to any other smartphone.

If you already sold your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

1. Unpair your Apple Watch by following the unpair without iPhone section of our guide.

2. If iCloud is still signed into your account and Find My iPhone is enabled, then sign into iCloud.com and use the Find My iPhone web app to erase your device. After the device has been erased click on Remove from Account.

2a. Alternatively you can ask the new person of the iOS device to delete data by going to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. If asked, enter your Apple ID details. Finally hit the ‘Erase’ button. You might also be asked device’s passcode or Restrictions passcode.

3. If steps 2 and 2a don’t work, then change your Apple ID password. This will prevent the new owner of the device to delete your iCloud data or get access to new data as you enter add it on your account.

4. Use iCloud.com’s Settings app to remove Apple Pay credit and debit cards from your account.

5. You should also deregister iMessage in case you are switching from iPhone to any other smartphone.

There you go folks, these are the steps you should perform before before you sell iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
