In this guide, you will learn how you can put your iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro in DFU mode and solve many of its software-related problems.

DFU mode or Device Firmware Update mode is an advanced troubleshooting tool that lets you perform a clean installation of iOS on your device. When this mode is activated the iOS device communicates with iTunes or Finder without loading the boot loader.

This mode is ideal for situations where your device is stuck on a black screen, or Apple logo screen or has become unresponsive. After putting the device in DFU mode users can connect their device to a computer using a USB cable and reinstall iOS on it from scratch.

You can follow these steps on the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. They should also work on iPhone 15, iPhone 14, and older models.

Enter DFU Mode on iPhone 16

  1. Connect the iPhone to a computer with a USB cable.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  3. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  4. Press and hold the Side/Power button until your iPhone’s screen goes black.
  5. As soon as the screen goes black, press and hold the Volume Down button along with the Side button.
  6. After 5 seconds let go of the Side button and keep the Volume Down button pressed until you see a notification on your computer that it has detected an iPhone in DFU mode.

After this, you can proceed to clean install iOS by clicking on the Restore iPhone button on iTunes or Finder.

At any point, if you see the Apple logo screen, then your device has failed to enter DFU mode. When that happens you should start again.

Exit DFU Mode on iPhone 16

If you wish to exit the DFU mode without restoring iOS on your device, then you can follow the steps below.

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the Side button until your iPhone screen goes black and the Apple logo appears.

There you have it folks, this is how you can easily put an iPhone 16 in DFU mode and perform a restore on it to fix many of its issues.
