Changes in iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4

Third-party app marketplaces and other EU changes

The biggest change in iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 is only available for users in the European Union. Starting iOS 17.4 Apple is allowing third-party app marketplaces on iPhone. This means third parties will be able to have their marketplace on iPhone and make free and paid apps available for users. Apps sold through these third-party app marketplaces will not have to clear Apple’s strict approval process before they can be installed on iOS devices.

In addition to third-party marketplaces, EU users will have access to browser engines other than WebKit, support for alternate payment methods within apps, and a popup in Safari that will ask the users if they want to make another web browser their default browser. Users based within the EU will also be able to set the default wallet and NFC apps for Apple Pay.

New Emoji

Apple is adding new Emoji for iPhone and iPad users in iOS 17.4. This includes new Phoenix bird emoji, lime emoji, brown mushroom, head shaking horizontally, head shaking vertically, broken chain, and more.

New setting for Stolen Device Protection

A change in the new Stolen Device Protection feature will allow users to always require security delay when changing security settings. This will enable them to turn off the setting which would bypass the security delay when the user is at a trusted location.

Transcripts in Podcasts app

The new transcript feature in the Podcasts app will display automatically generated transcripts, which will highlight the words that are being spoken at the moment.

Siri improvements

In iOS 17.4 Siri will be able to read messages in languages other than the ones that are assigned to it for other tasks. The new options are available under Settings -> Siri & Search _> Messaging with Siri. There users can tap on Read Messages option and then on Add Language.

New setting for Apple Vision Pro users

A new toggle will allow Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 users to disable the Double Tap feature when they are wearing Vision Pro to avoid conflict between the Apple Watch and Vision Pro when the user is gesturing.

Tweaks for Battery Health

In iOS 17.4 Apple brings the Battery Health indication to the main Battery screen, making it easier for users to see the current health of their device’s battery. In addition to that iOS 17.4 will calculate iPhone’s battery health based on the new 1,000-cycle lifespan announced by Apple for iPhone 15 series devices.

CarPlay enhancements

For Apple CarPlay, iOS 17.4 will allow Apple Maps to present a new instrument cluster experience where the information for upcoming maneuvers will be displayed on the instrument cluster screen.
