After a long delay, Apple has officially launched CarPlay Ultra in the US and Canada. The new and fully redesigned version of CarPlay, which will offer deeper integration between the iPhone and vehicle systems, is launching with new Aston Martin vehicles.
Unlike the CarPlay of today, which is only available on a vehicle’s infotainment system, the new CarPlay Ultra integrates directly into all driver screens, including the instrument cluster. With the new integration, users will be able to get real-time navigation, speedometer and tachometer, media controls, vehicle-specific data, and driver assistance system right inside the CarPlay interface.
Drivers are able to control CarPlay Ultra through the physical buttons, on-screen buttons, and Siri. With this deeper integration, users are also able to use Siri to perform advanced car functions such as controlling climate control, performance settings, and audio.
Unlike previous versions of CarPlay, the CarPlay Ultra will reflect the automaker’s unique design language and provide a tailored interface that goes well with the automaker’s design philosophy. Apple will achieve this with personalized themes, colors, and wallpapers.
While Apple is launching CarPlay Ultra with Aston Martin, other auto manufacturers that including Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, are also committed to adopting the company’s platform.
Apple says CarPlay Ultra is available in the U.S. and Canada in Aston Martin vehicles right now. Aston Martin vehicles sold with the company’s next-gen infotainment system can also upgrade to CarPlay Ultra through dealer-installed software in the coming weeks.
Apple CarPlay Ultra requires an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later.
