Along side iOS 14.5 Apple has also released watchOS 7.4 update and it is now available for download. The new update brings a feature for iPhone users that will make your life a lot easy.
The biggest change watchOS 7.4 brings for Apple Watch is is the ability for Face ID equipped iPhone users to unlock their iPhone with ease while wearing a face mask.
Once the user has downloaded iOS 14.5 and watchOS 7.4 on his or her devices they will be able to use this new feature. How this works is pretty simple, whenever iPhone detects that you are trying to unlock with Face ID while wearing a face mask, it will look for your Apple Watch and see if it is on your wrist and in unlocked state. Once both of these checks are satisfied the iPhone will unlock automatically.
Even though Apple has rolled out this feature in light of the COVID-19 Pandemic the feature can be useful for people who have to unlock their iPhones while wearing a face mask or some sort of religious face covering.
This feature is similar to how Apple Watch users can unlock their Mac with Apple Watch.
Apple Watch users can also enable unlock Apple Watch with iPhone feature. When this feature is enabled, Apple Watch gets unlocked automatically as you put it on wrist and unlock your iPhone for the first time. If you use this feature and unlock iPhone before wearing a mask, you can unlock both devices without entering passcode or Face ID, which is pretty cool.
You can start using this feature after updating your iPhone with Face ID to iOS 14.5 and installing watchOS 7.4 on your Apple Watch. The feature works with Apple Watch Series 3 or later and requires passcode to be enabled on Apple Watch.
