In iOS 18.1 Apple has added a new photo editing tool called Clean Up in the Photos app. This tool allows users to remove unwanted objects and people from their photos.

Clean Up uses Apple Intelligence to identify and remove objects pointed out by the user and fills up the space automatically.

The Clean Up tool is available in iOS 18.1 or later. Right now Apple is running iOS 18.1 beta and has added this feature in the Photos app for devices running iOS 18.1 beta 3.

The Clean Up feature will be rolled out for the public when iOS 18.1 is released for public sometime in October.

Using Clean Up tool in Photos app

You can follow the steps below to use the Clean Up tool in iOS 18.1 or later.

  1. Launch the Photos app and load up the photo you want to clean up.
  2. Tap on the photo editing button from the bottom bar.
  3. Now tap on the ‘Clean Up’ option. When you tap on Clean Up for the first time iOS might download the tool from the web.
  4. After the tool is ready, tap on the object you want to remove from the image. If it is a large object, you can also draw a circle around it to identify it.

After you have tapped on the object or drawn a circle around it, the Clean Up tool will remove it for you. If you are not satisfied with the result, then you can draw a circle around the object one more time to further refine the clean up.

While the Clean Up feature of iOS 18.1 is certainly amazing it is not perfect, yet. The feature is still in beta and it should improve in the upcoming versions of iOS.

However, its addition to the Photos app is certainly great news for users as they will no longer need to download third-party apps to remove unwanted objects from their photos.
