When it is active you will not receive any notifications for that particular thread no matter if this is a single person chat or a group chat.

You can remove the moon symbol and turn off Do Not Disturb mode for that thread by swiping left on it in the list view and then tapping on the ‘Show Alerts’ button. As soon as you do this the crescent moon symbol for Do Not Disturb mode will disappear.
