Apple introduced the third-generation of iPhone SE with old design and new 5G capability back in March 2022. Now Apple leaker Jon Prosser of FrontPageTech claims that Apple will be replacing it with a fourth-generation iPhone SE, which “is just the iPhone XR”.
Prosser made this claim in the Geared Up podcast citing information from his sources. While the re-release of iPhone XR with iPhone SE branding might not excite many but if this turns out to be true, then it going to be a major event with big consequences for the smartphone world being the cheapest 5G iPhone up for sale.
Apple’s iPhone SE, which targets the budget conscious end of the market has carried the same design as iPhone 8 for many years. Apple had redesigned the iPhone SE in April 2020 and gave it the iPhone 8 design complete with a home button.
Since then the device has looked the same with the 2022 update bringing 5G capability and improved specs while everything else remained the same.
An iPhone XR like SE will finally feature a brand new design that will look much similar to Apple’s modern device line up and include an edge-to-edge display and a notch. It will also let go of the home button and Touch ID sensor in favor of Face ID.
iPhone XR to jog your memory is no longer on sale at Apple’s website. Released alongside iPhone XS it featured a 6.1-inch LCD display.
Now of course Apple won’t simply be relaunching the exact same iPhone XR as it released back in 2018. iPhone SE 4 despite having the same design as iPhone XR will be equipped with latest specs like the A15 chip, 5G capability, improved cameras and more.
An iPhone SE with iPhone XR like design will be a game changer to Apple’s budget market strategy and allow it to better compete with budget Android alternatives, especially if it is able to offer iPhone SE 4 at the same price as the current model, which sells for $429.
