What To Do When iPhone Won’t Turn On (Fixes)

Try Hard Reset Your iPhone

This is the thing you might consider before any other fix. Because sometimes, putting your iPhone into a hard reset solves all the problems, especially when you don’t know what to do when your iPhone won’t turn on. 

So, given your iPhone model, hard reset your device, by following the steps below:

  • Hard Reset iPhone 6s, iPhone SE, & Earlier: For iPhone 6, SE, and earlier models, press and hold the ‘Home Button’ and the ‘Power Button’ (Sleep/Wake button). Wait for the screen to become black and let the Apple logo reappear.
  • Hard Reset iPhone 7 & 7 Plus: For these models, press and hold the ‘Volume Down Button’ and the ‘Power Button’ simultaneously and wait till you see the Apple logo again on the screen.
  • Hard Reset iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11: In order to solve why won’t my iPhone turn on, press and release the ‘Volume Up Button’, and then press and release the ‘Volume Down’ button. Now, press and hold the ‘Side Button’ and wait for the Apple logo to appear.

Putting Your iPhone In Device Firmware Update (DFU) Mode

This fix helps restore, remove, and reload the software and firmware of your iPhone. This method can be effective in any software problem in your iPhone particularly when your iPhone won’t turn on.

DFU Restore iPhone 6 and Earlier

Connect your iPhone to your computer with iTunes (use charging cable to connect both devices). Press and hold the ‘Power’ button and the ‘Home’ button simultaneously. Wait for eight seconds. Now, release the power button only and keep pressing the ‘Home’ button. When you see your iPhone in iTunes, release the ‘Home’ button. If your iPhone didn’t appear in iTunes, repeat the process from the beginning.

DFU Restore An iPhone 7 Or 7 Plus

Connect your iPhone to the computer. Now, press and hold the ‘Volume Down’ button and the ‘Power’ button. Wait for eight seconds, and then release the ‘Power’ button and keep pressing the ‘Volume Down’ button. Wait till your iPhone appears in iTunes. Repeat the whole process if your iPhone didn’t show up in iTunes. 

DFU Restore An iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone XS, And iPhone XR

Connect your iPhone to the computer with iTunes. Press and release the ‘Volume Up’ button, then press and release the ‘Volume Down’ button, and in the end press and hold the ‘Side’ button. When the screen turns black, press and hold the ‘Volume Down’ button while continuing to press the ‘Side’ button. Wait for five seconds. Now, release the ‘Side’ button and continue to press the ‘Volume’ down button. Keep pressing unless you see your iPhone on iTunes.
